Introduction and Overview

The TNLA Youth Parliament 2025, organized by the Speakers’ Forum on the 12th and 13th of August, marked a significant milestone as the first flagship event of the Forum’s 2025–2026 tenure. Bringing together students of SVCE from various departments, the event provided a platform for intellectual engagement, democratic discourse, and practical exposure to legislative processes. Delegates assumed the roles of Members of the Legislative Assembly, simulating real-world proceedings of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly with remarkable authenticity. In preparation for the event, the Speakers’ Forum conducted a workshop titled Arasiyal 101, which familiarized delegates with parliamentary procedures, debating formats, and the flow of assembly discussions, equipping them with confidence and clarity. The agenda,“Review of the Prevailing Law and Order Conditions in Tamil Nadu,” encouraged participants to critically analyze challenges, policy gaps, and mechanisms for improvement. Over the two-day period, delegates balanced parliamentary rigor with teamwork, innovative thought, and persuasive communication, gaining firsthand experience of governance responsibilities while fostering civic awareness and a deeper understanding of democracy.

Key Discussions and Deliberations

The debates tackled some of the most pressing challenges facing Tamil Nadu’s law and order, including policing efficiency, judicial delays, custodial accountability, cybercrime, and public safety. Government benches proposed measures to make institutions more efficient, introduce technologydriven monitoring, and strengthen rapid-response systems, all while ensuring transparency and fairness. The opposition drew attention to administrative lapses, community mistrust, and socioeconomic factors behind unrest, stressing that systemic reforms were just as important as enforcement. Delegates carefully considered civil liberties alongside security concerns, proposing solutions that aimed to protect individual rights while keeping the public safe. Ideas ranged from improved grievance redressal systems and community policing initiatives to educational programs for crime prevention. Throughout these discussions, participants displayed sharp analytical thinking, strategic reasoning, and collaborative decision-making. The lively exchange of arguments and counterarguments created an authentic legislative atmosphere. Beyond debating skills, students reflected on the real-world impact of governance, showing how experiential learning can prepare young minds to engage meaningfully with complex societal issues.
